Personally I feel that the American education system needs to be restructured- the concept of having well rounded people in a first class society is logical. I say this because students continue a full range of subject until the age of 18. However what the country needs is a more specialised education system from a younger age. This would not only increase the skills needed to push the country's PPF curse outwards- it would furthermore unveil a new spectrum of education courses and vocational courses for students that might not be 'academic'. This structure can be seen in the EU and there is mass investment in the UK for such programs. Hence the system in America needs to be modernised to meet the needs of the the 21st century society.

The key word is relationship. I think that students want the same thing everyone wants in a relationship. If we pause for a moment we would realise that the process of teaching and learning lends itself to the development of a relationship. In our case as school teachers we have a professional teacher-student relationship with the children under our supervision. They expect us to do to them that which we would have others do to us and our own family. They expect the three F's ( Fairness, Firmness, Friendliness). We as teachers must find that intricate balance with our students between being professional and having our students see us people who are trustworthy, honest and supportive. If we can find that type of relationship with our students I think more than half the battle will be over.

I know exactly how you feel! I left school yesterday because of an anxiety attack. I became upset and couldn't stop crying. Doctor is increasing my dosage on Zoloft and prescribed a nerve pill to help me make it through the rest of this year. I cried all day yesterday and stayed up half the night crying. I feel like a total failure. I want to quit but we desperately need my income so what do I do? I have a twelve year old son and an eighteen year old daughter in college. I want a job where I can leave and not bring anything home with me. The thought of returning to work Monday makes me physically ill. I don't want to deal with the other teachers or the administration.

I am so glad to know that other teachers feel the same way. I am in my thirteenth year of teaching and I am so depressed right now that I taking three days to regroup. Honestly the thought of returning to school Monday makes me cry and have panic attacks. I have felt like a failure in all aspects of my life. I don't have the energy to be a good mother to my twelve year old son. I come home from a bad day and fall asleep sitting up on the couch. I rarely make dinner anymore..thank god my husband has assumed that responsibility. The increased pressure to make sure all students are proficient is driving me crazy. Now not only am I dealing with the pressure to ensure that all my students are proficient I have to deal with other teachers who love to gossip about everyone. I have decided that teachers can be some of the meanest most hateful people out there! I was verbally attacked by another teacher yesterday when I was trying to explain a situation to him. I left the school crying and hyperventilating. My doctor has now prescribed me a nerve pill so that I can make it through the rest of the year. I feel it is time to move on but I have this guilt about leaving the profession. I guess leaving makes me feel as though I have failed.

I can see you are being inclusive of those with different belief systems right here. Good job! And nice "assumption" that only home schoolers do that. I'm glad to hear you are an authority on how parents of public school children raise their children.

Well said, Linda and Peggy U, and others weighing in on the liberal versus conservative thread. I am a liberal homeschooling mom with two master's degrees, who has written for national magazines, taught at the university level and works as a writing coach. One of the reasons I so love homeschooling is the fact that my friends are diverse, not only in their ethnicity, income levels and religious outlooks, but in their political views. I am delighted that such a diverse group of us can get together so often and form a community that is based on common interests and values. We don't focus on what divides us. I believe that this is one of the long-term benefits of homeschooling that gets overlooked: we are raising children who are inclusive and make connections with those with different belief systems. When our homeschooling children reach a critical mass in adulthood, I hope they are able to quell the modern tendency to break into political factions that can't work together. Some people say we aren't being patriotic enough because we aren't subjecting our kids to school. I say we are creating a solution to the divisiveness of our political and social systems.
